Grade: B+Every year Hunter and his half-sister, Ashlin, spend the summer with their dad in Maine, and their best friend/crush, Chance. That's right, they both harbor feelings for the mysterious young man. Now they're spending a gap year with their dad, and Chance seems to have more secrets and be telling more lies than ever. And he may just be dangerous.MADE OF STARSHIP alternates first person POVs between Ashlin and Hunter, and Chance chimes in for the last chapter. Kelley York created three distinct characters, I wish she had given them different voices in their chapters. Chance, wounded and needy, was my favorite and the most complex. Hunter proved to be a bit of a wimp, especially with the girlfriend he strung along. Ashlin was the least developed. I thought the father, a former police officer, should have been a lot more savvy. The plot drew me in from the beginning, made me continue to turn pages at a fast pace and kept building to a surprising, but logical conclusion. I read MADE OF STARSHIP in half a day. I only discovered Kelley York last week, but in that time I've already read most of her work. She has a knack for creating interesting, unique characters, dark stories and mostly plausible plots. I recommend this and her other novels to people who walk on the dark and twisty side of life.THEMES: family, friendship, LGBT, murder
Hunter and Ashlin, half brother and sister, meet Chance one summer down by the water behind their father's house. The friendship is almost instant, and from that point on, they are pretty much inseparable. Seeing Chance becomes the highlight of their summers with their dad through their youth and into their teen years. After graduation, Hunter decides to take some time off before going to college. One November he decides to visit his father (outside of the normal summer visits) and Ashlin decides to fly up from California and meet him in Maine. Both are dying to see Chance -- he's always been their light, and they haven't been back to their dad's in over two years -- but Chance isn't expecting them and no one knows where he lives or how to contact him. When the trio finally reconnect, they desperately try to fall into their routine, but it's obvious things are different. Though Ashlin still pines for Chance, he wants Hunter, and when Hunter's girlfriend comes for a visit, it will force all of them to reevaluate their relationships with each other and with themselves. It's no secret how much I love Kelley York's writing. Hushed absolutely blew me away and I loved her self-pubbed, Suicide Watch. Her style is flawless and she writes with such depth and honesty that I know if I'm about to sit down with one of her books, I better not have anything else planned because I'm going to be sucked in and won't stop reading until I've finished. While this one had a slower pace, it didn't bother me at all. It actually fit the story very well. She manages to keep the tone dark and intriguing while slowly moving the story forward and unraveling the mystery surrounding Chance and the effect he has on Ashlin and Hunter. The story is told from dual perspectives, so we get to hear both Hunter and Ashlin's views, and while this enhanced the story greatly, it's also where I struggled the most. This is a small, nitpicky thing, but there wasn't much distinction between the voices of the characters. There were times when I would get wrapped up in it all and forget who was telling the story. I thought maybe it was just me, but after finishing the book, I read a few reviews and found a few others had the same problem. Again, it's minor, but it did distract me a bit.One of Kelley's strengths is her ability to write unforgettable, realistically broken characters, and this book is no exception. What I liked most was that none of them slipped into cliche mode. Ashlin had the potential to fall into jealous sibling/bitchy girl/you stole my boyfriend mode, but she never did. I felt her love for Chance and her disappointment when he couldn't return that love.Speaking of Chance, he's probably the most interesting of the three leads. Lively yet mysterious, it's everything unknown about him that captivates Hunter and Ashlin and even the reader. He's so lovingly flawed, you can't help but care about him.Of the three, I think Hunter was probably the weakest. I didn't hate him, or even dislike him, I just felt like I already knew his story, and I didn't connect with him the way I wanted.Beautifully broken characters, a tragic story, impeccable writing and a realistic, yet heartbreaking conclusion, make this a story that fans of Kelley's should not miss. While it didn't quite hit me the way Hushed did, I still enjoyed it very much and would highly recommend it.
Simple but powerful. Some aspect of the book is M/M romance which is very different from the books I had read so far in the genere. It is more gentle and it deals more with accepting the feeling than an actual realationship. The book starts a little bit slow but it bulids up until 50% of the book where things begins to happen and the plot gets more interesting. The end killed me. After I read the last sentance I cried for at least ten minutes. It was very sad ending but beautiful with it's simplicity. In my opinion, this is what made this book so powerful, it's simplicity. Sometimes, it isn't needed drama or action or head over heels romance, sometimes the simple events of life is what made the story so beautiful and this is the selling point of this book and what made it so beautiful and sad at the end.
Disappointing. Not a fully fleshed out story. I was left with a lot of questions and found the relationship that the Jackson family had with Chance a little unbelievable. By the time it got anywhere it was over.
Very interesting story. one think i cannot accpet is chance and hunter are full in love with each other. ewl.
